The Yevatron was a joint Sino-American project constructed in - and on - the Pacific Ocean. This giant particle accelerator was second only to the arcology network on Earth in terms of expense. It is credited with the discovery of the inflaton, and by extension, the tachyon. The production of the energies required created a region of space in which the fabric of spacetime itself was 'scooped up', compressing the synchrotron and generating a moderate nuclear explosion, destroying the device.

Rebuilding it to proper tolerances took an extensive amount of time, and MEHRS was completed first. They both went fully active again in the early 23rd century, where they share credit for unleashing the mobius patterns.
