The first three-dimensional printers were developed during the 21st century. As time went on, their capabilities increased, and many were capable of self-replication. This eventually became a prerequisite, and soon this came to include chemical synthesis. More advanced models are even capable of limited forms of nucleic synthesis - constructing limited quantities of rare atoms as needed.

While not perfect, they greatly enhance the constructive abilities of the 'common' individual. Some humans actually consider them to be survival gear. Others consider them heretics of a sort, along with eating food directly processed from them - though they are a good source of fresh ingredients and spices.
