Technology

A breakdown of technological sections. While each is important, materials technology is important to keep in mind - science has run into many barriers, all centered around the fact that the quality of the stuff in the universe simply isn't good enough. Hawkinium gives a break in certain, limited areas, but even with that, it still suffers the same limitations of ordinary matter.

  • Astrum Parvulus, or Star Child, is the term for the pinnacle design of human enhancement that began with the Beta Strain.
  • Biotechnology began the 'modern' era with the advent of the Prometheus Accords and the development of the Alpha Strain. Sapiation has granted a few animals and other biological constructs sentience.
  • Communication technology bears some slight merit in discussing, mostly about encryption, though satmets are notable.
  • Computers have advanced significantly, of course, giving rise to sapient machines and the encephalon.
  • Defense technology primarily consists of deflectors, shields, and screens, though simple armor plays a role as well.
  • Exotics - The study of exotic matter.
  • Materials science, while having progressed significantly, has discovered little in the way of truely novel materials in the past two centuries, at least in terms of structural integrity.
  • Nanotechnology was not quite the revolution some thought it would, though they were considered heavily in the Anti-Homogenization Act.
  • Patterns play an important part in modern technology.
  • Power is dominated by deuterium fusion for civilian needs, while solar power represents the vast majority of gathered energy. Antimatter and warp cells are not, currently, terribly feasible, nor when compared to klein taps are they likely to ever be.
  • Propulsion technology for most spacefaring vessels is largely based on photon pressure output using a special kind of fusion reactor. Inside atmospheres, standard methods dominate though lifters are also present, and various lighter-than-air vehicles are quite common.
  • Replication is also important to look at for the sake of economics in Solar Storms.
  • Sensory technology is mostly a refinement of modern technology.
  • Ships are separated into a number of categories between combat and utilitarian. See that node for details.
  • Weaponry has some familiar and unfamiliar forms.
