Leadership Backgrouunds
These backgrounnds involve people or others that follow you, for one reason or another. The exact specifics depend on the background and game in question.
Command
It is the nature of the Exalted to lead troops into battle. When young, these forces serve as powerful supplements to the capabilities of the Exalted. As they mature, they serve as garrison, occupation and peacekeeping troops.
Forces under this background are considered to be Mundane - better than Extras, but not quite Heroic. Depending on the nature of the troops, GMs may assign different numbers.
- ●○○○○○○○○○ : 5 warriors
- ●●○○○○○○○○ : 25 warriors
- ●●●○○○○○○○ : 125 warriors
- ●●●●○○○○○○ : 500 warriors
- ●●●●●○○○○○ : 2,500 warriors
- ●●●●●●○○○○ : 12,500 warriors
- ●●●●●●●○○○ : 50,000 warriors
- ●●●●●●●●○○ : 250,000 warriors
- ●●●●●●●●●○ : 1,250,000 warriors
- ●●●●●●●●●● : 5,000,000 warriors
Cult
- Only Essence-Wielders may benefit from the Cult background
- Cult provides no benefit above the character's permanent Essence score
A Cult represents a religious devotion to a character - the amount of worship he or she receives. Cults can be massive things, requiring dedicated, full-time priests to signify. If combined with the Follower background, the character's cult is fanatical, and she can expect them to kill and die for her in her name.
Cult adds its rating directly to a character's hourly Essence regeneration. Every day, at a set time the character chooses when she receives the appropriate level in this background, she regains a number of channelled Virtue Points equal to half her Cult rating, rounded down. Finally, a character with the Cult background may support a number of High Priests. She can grant special benefits to her high priests, depending on her Charms and others explained in the Merits section.
- ●○○○○○○○○○ : Requires a dedicated priest, may support a single high priest, recovers no virtue points per day. Regains 1 mote of Essence per hour.
- ●●○○○○○○○○ : Requires 16 dedicated priests, may support four high priests, recovers one virtue point per day. Regains 2 motes of Essence per hour.
- ●●●○○○○○○○ : Requires 81 dedicated priests, may support nine high priests, recovers one virtue point per day. Regains 3 motes of Essence per hour.
- ●●●●○○○○○○ : Requires 256 dedicated priests, may support sixteen high priests, recovers two virtue points per day. Regains 4 motes of Essence per hour.
- ●●●●●○○○○○ : Requires 625 dedicated priests, may support 25 high priests, recovers two virtue points per day. Regains 5 motes of Essence per hour.
- ●●●●●●○○○○ : Requires 1,296 dedicated priests, may support 36 high priests, recovers three virtue points per day. Regains 6 motes of Essence per hour.

- ●●●●●●●●●● : Requires 10,000 dedicated priests, may support 100 high priests, recovers five virtue points per day. Regains 10 motes of Essence per hour.
Familiar
Maximum of Five Ranks
A Familiar is a once-mundane creature who has developed a powerful magical link to an Exalt. To Charms and outside observers, the Familiar seems to be little more than an ordinary animal, though it may seem to possess extraordinary intelligence and fortitude for a creature of its nature.
(To be finished after Animal and Character Creation rules are finished)
Followers
Followers are extras - mundane civilians with little to no military training, but are willing to support and offer their services to you. While loyal, they are still human, and expect decent treatment, though definitions of decent will vary. They serve as basic fodder for the Cult background - if the Cult background is also taken with this, it represents a fanatical following, willing to offer their lives in the name of their god.
The Followers background grants the following number of followers based on the rank of the background. They are all considered to be extras, and are not particularly combat capable.
- ●○○○○○○○○○ : 250
- ●●○○○○○○○○ : 1,250
- ●●●○○○○○○○ : 6,250
- ●●●●○○○○○○ : 25,000
- ●●●●●○○○○○ : 125,000
- ●●●●●●○○○○ : 625,000
- ●●●●●●●○○○ : 2,500,000
- ●●●●●●●●○○ : 12,500,000
- ●●●●●●●●●○ : 62,500,000
- ●●●●●●●●●● : 250,000,000
Followers need to be managed, protected, and cared for. Equivelant ranks in the Henchmen, Command, and Resources background can represent each of these respectively.
Henchmen
Henchmen are loyal retainers, capable mortals who can assist the Exalted in many ways. They may be ultra-elite shock troops (compared to other mortals), regional governers, or just trusted friends. They are considered to be Heroic characters.
- ●○○○○○○○○○ : 1 henchman
- ●●○○○○○○○○ : 2 henchmen
- ●●●○○○○○○○ : 7 henchmen
- ●●●●○○○○○○ : 20 henchmen
- ●●●●●○○○○○ : 55 henchmen
- ●●●●●●○○○○ : 150 henchmen
- ●●●●●●●○○○ : 400 henchmen
- ●●●●●●●●○○ : 1,100 henchmen
- ●●●●●●●●●○ : 2,900 henchmen
- ●●●●●●●●●● : 7,800 henchmen
The quality of a character's individual henchmen is assumed to improve as they get more. This need not always be the case, but it keeps the numbers within a saner range than the Command or Followers backgrounds.
Lieutenant
- This background may be purchased multiple times. Each time, it represents a new Lieutenant.
- Divine Beings (see the Core Rules for details) may never be Lieutenants.
Lieutenants are powerful aids, either Heroic, Mystical or Superior in capability. They are not allies, but instead characters who are subservient to the whims and goals of the character. As such, they ask little in return (though more than followers, troops, or henchment).
