Terraforming is the process of making a planet habitable for a specific form of biosphere. While all 'natural' complex life in the Galaxy is carbon-based, using water as a solvent and thrives in an oxygen atmosphere, the Renlai and Sorenen civilizations experimented with other biospheres, some of which still thrive today.
