Martian Compact

The Martian Compact is a loose set of proposed rules and guidelines, and actually had no open membership or organization. Earth organizations tried to ban membership, but such was pointless - either someone agreed to the precepts or they didn't, and ultimately, the fate of Mars as an independent state was a guaranteed one.

The Compact had three core principles. While they did not explicitly state their goals, the meaning was obvious to many, on both the Red Planet and on Earth.

  1. We recognize those rights that are common to and deserved by all humanity - to life, to happiness, to security, to meaning.
  2. We do not recognize the claims of those over things which are not theirs.
  3. We do not recognize the right of one to impose limitations on another solely for the sake of dogma or bureaucracy.

Eventually, Earthborne governments and corporations tried to assert their 'rights' over the 'rogue' state, and sent a fleet to bring them to order. This resulted in the Martian Conflict, and the rise of the Solar Consortium.
