A klein tap is an unusually weighty device that draws energy from a neighboring universe, creating a power source capable of outputting unlimited amounts of energy - at least in theory. The first klein tap was created in 2205, and resulted in the annihilation of Kennedy Station, the device drawing outputting orders of magnitude more power than the Sun for a brief instant before blowing itself to pieces. The Maanen incident, nearly three decades later, went similarly, though with far more catastrophic results.
Shortly before the Purge, a more reliable tap was discovered, and the mystery of the destruction of Kennedy Station and the Maanen incident solved - at least in part. Even still, their construction is difficult - the exact same design may only be used once, and stable ones require hypomatter. Thus, they are exceedingly rare, though every ship in the Regalia has at least one.
